The Cavendish 500 was designed in the R&D department at Walton-on-Thames, Surrey in 1975 just before the company moved to the west country in 1976, but was not put in to production until 1977, so called the 500 due the width of the backbar.
Due to the wider chassis it allowed a total of six gas cylinders to be fitted which included the gas Cyclopropane, long since been discontinued in Anaesthesia.
It also had an option to fit an Oxygen Failsafe device. This device in the event of oxygen supply failing, will cut off the supply of all other gases and open an inspiratory valve to atmosphere allowing spontaneous breathing patients to breathe.
Approximately four years after launch an all stainless steel model was produced.
The model shown is an all stainless steel version featuring a Dupaco Carden ventilator, an MIE ECG monitor, an MIE pulse monitor an MIE Jumbo Carbon dioxide absorber and MIE pipeline suction device The back bar is fitted with a Cyprane Temperature controlled Tec 3 vaporizer and an MIE Bubble thro Ether gradoliser.
The 500 was produced alongside the Cavendish 5 range for several years until the 5 was discontinued in 1980.
